These are the songs that we use regularly in all classes... Let me know if there are any missing - it can be added to throughout the year!

Sue Nicholls - Song Hamper workshop
This was a free workshop at the Music Education Expo that Dilara and I attended. Sue Nicholls has written hundreds of fab children's songs and was kind enough to share these 10 songs completely free! I recorded the entire workshop, so I will upload the sheet music that she gave us and the recording (sorry, it's one recording of the whole workshop so you may have to skip through to get to the relevant songs, but it is worth a listen to as it was interesting).
Fireworks Song: Always a favourite. This is a great one to introduce for bonfire night and then continue for the rest of the year. A fantastic action song as you can make up actions for each firework and get children to add their own suggestions. Adding scarves also gives the children something to wave around/throw and can look really effective. Sometimes I get all the children to put their scarves on the lycra and we sing it that way - it can get a bit hectic, but is really good fun!
Lycra songs (description)Mainly used in Quavers and Crotchets with lycra; can be adapted for whatever animal is appropriate to session or requested by children - this song is used alot in the Autumn term for the animal bag sessions.

Bjork: One for use with the lycra, especially to highlight dynamic changes...

Copy me: A song to encourage children to copy your actions or rhythms... Encourage the children to sing the song and create the actions for their peers to copy.

I walk and walk: Use this song to move around the room at different tempi - walking, skipping, hopping etc. Could also set the tempo using claves or an egg. As they become more experienced some of the older children (KS1) could be asked to set the tempo. This can be adapted to I play and stop when using instruments.

I have a little drum: A great alternative (or addition) to I play and stop with instruments; adapt the name of the instrument according to what the children are playing. You could even have a variety of instruments out and the children only play when their instrument is mentioned in the song. Can also create good discussions about how you play the instrument - ie. shake the egg, tap the claves etc.

An absolute classic! I often finish the session with this and will adapt it to suit whichever animal we may have focused on in the session - or, even better, get the children to come up with which animal - we've had everything from sleeping spiders to sleeping dragons (and of course, unicorns!)

Another favourite, particularly good in the run up to Christmas/winter - but great at any time of year!

A lovely one for circle games - works particularly well with Crotchets (Nursery) and Quavers, but can also be really effective with Minims (Reception) and Semibreves (year 1 or even year 2)!

A great warm up and action song to do. Can also be used as a transition activity between sitting down and standing up (or the other way round), or just as a filler if they are getting wriggly and need to move!

A great alternative to Sleeping Bunnies - this can be sung without the track, but I prefer to use it with the track as the music is great!!

This is a lovely song that can be used either as an action song or with the lycra. It could also be adapted to use with other forms of transport, but is really lovely to finish with the mouse verse as the children love the huge change in dynamics (getting them all to shout "outside the door!")
I have uploaded the lyrics to the version we usually do. Feel free to send me any updated verses that you might come up with, with the children! |

An alternative to musical statues - this song tells the children when to freeze. It's a lovely one as just an action song, or to play with instruments - just make sure they are trying their hardest to keep the instruments really quiet when they freeze.
